Becoming Ahsoka Tano: Rosario Dawson’s BTS Videos

Watch actress Rosario Dawson transform into Ahsoka Tano and back again!

The Mandalorian actress Rosario Dawson joined in the Ahsoka Tano Day celebrations this year by sharing a number of behind-the-scenes videos showing her radical transformation into Ahsoka (and back again) on her Instagram account.

Ahsoka Tano Day is an annual online celebration of all things Tano started by Twitter user @AhsokaTanosLife back in 2015. And if you’re wondering why it’s celebrated on January 29, it’s because Ahsoka was first revealed to the public in a promotional image for the 2008 The Clone Wars feature film on January 29, 2008!

Now that Rosario has joined “Team Tano”, she treated Star Wars fans to some previously unseen footage: a time-lapse BTS video detailing the intricate (and lengthy) makeup and costuming process involved in transforming the actress into the live-action Ahsoka. A process that involved a number of forehead prosthetics, air-brushing, a sizeable amount of orange makeup, and a headpiece consisting of Ahsoka’s signature montrals, lekku, and diadem.

She took a moment to thank Ashley Eckstein for bringing this beloved character to life and added that “It’s one of the greatest honors and privileges of my life to share this remarkable character with the world alongside you.”

In another video, we can see the actress putting in her blue contact lenses and having her fingers painted while she has a quick bite to eat, fiddles with her phone, and strikes some cheeky poses for the camera. She added that “It feels like next level cosplay till the contacts are in” and that during one of her days on set, her talented makeup artists Brian Sipe and Samantha Ward managed to complete the entire process in one hour, 43 minutes, and 25 seconds, not counting the fitting of the wig cap or wardrobe change.

And, last but not least, Rosario’s final video of the day showed the actress transforming back into her regular human self, peeling off her forehead prosthetics, cleansing her skin of heavy makeup, and releasing her long hair from its skullcap prison. She also shared a fun fact: They filled a drawer with leftover forehead pieces. Perhaps they’ll be using some of those for the upcoming Disney+ series?

Makeup artist Samantha Ward shared an even more amusing fact in the replies: They framed one of the aforementioned forehead pieces and gave it to Dave Filoni.  Now there’s a mental image that will haunt our dreams…

Rosario Dawson will be reprising her role as Ahsoka Tano for the upcoming live-action series Star Wars: Ahsoka, a Disney+ exclusive series which is currently being written by Dave Filoni and will be produced by Filoni and fellow Mandalorian executive producer Jon Favreau.
