Dave Filoni Shares Two More Sketches of Ahsoka Tano

Dave Filoni continues to tease fans with the possibility of a new Ahsoka Tano adventure.

Dave Filoni isn’t just one of Lucasfilm’s most respected figures and a masterful storyteller; he’s also one hell of an artist, as he has demonstrated on numerous occasions. If you’ve been following him on social media or watching his panels at Star Wars Celebration, you’ll no doubt have seen some of his “doodles” at some point.

Earlier this year, he shared two new sketches of “Ahsoka the White”, teasing fans once again with cryptic messages and further whetting their appetites for a new Ahsoka Tano series. I apologise that this may be old news by now but I took a short hiatus from blogging earlier this year and am still working through my backlog of Ahsoka-related news, so please bear with me. ^_^

The first sketch Dave Filoni shared was posted on #RebelsRemembered Day (March 5) to mark the first anniversary of the show’s epic series finale and to thank fans for their support and well wishes. His sketch shows Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren making their way up some steps on a mountainous, icy world. Could this be Csilla, the frosty homeworld of the Chiss?

A short message accompanied the sketch: “Thank you all for sharing your memories of Star Wars Rebels. It was a wonderful show to make, and the entire crew is humbled by your outpouring of love and support with #RebelsRemembered. I tried to think of something to sketch for all of you today, but I couldn’t come up with something from the past, so I drew a possible future instead. It’s always good to check in on old friends, don’t you think? No, this is not a new show, just a drawing I did today for you, the greatest fans there are. Thank you.”

Given Filoni’s penchant for telling half-truths and dodging questions, his insistence that this “isn’t a new show” could be true… from a certain point of view. It’s possible that he plans to continue Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra’s stories in an animated feature-length film or bring these beloved characters into an existing TV series (e.g. The Mandalorian, Star Wars Resistance). Or perhaps he’s just being playfully pedantic, since his sketch is, indeed, “just a drawing”.

The second sketch was published on Filoni’s birthday (June 7) and depicts Ahsoka in her Rebels epilogue attire. Holding her staff, Ahsoka is perched on the edge of a cliff or mountain summit, gazing at the horizon. In the distance, we can see what appears to be a small bird flying above the landscape. Her avian companion Morai, perhaps?

Filoni’s message to his followers: “Many thanks for all the well wishes, I really appreciate it. Now here is a little something for all of you,” followed by a quote from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

“Do not trouble your hearts overmuch with thought of the road tonight. Maybe the paths that you each shall tread are already laid before your feet, though you do not see them.”

Long-time followers of Filoni’s will know that he takes enormous delight in dropping cryptic messages on his birthday or other special occasions. Remember his sketch of Ahsoka “Not the Wolf” Tano? By using this quote from Tolkien, could he be confirming our suspicions, that he’s working on a new series – or some other project – that has yet to be announced? There’s always a method in his madness.

Whatever Filoni’s intentions may be, one thing is abundantly clear: Star Wars Rebels fans are eager to see Ahsoka and Sabine return to the small screen and finally learn the whereabouts of Ezra Bridger and his unwitting hostage, Grand Admiral Thrawn. It’s only a matter of time until their fates are revealed.

And even though San Diego Comic Con and D23 open later this summer, it’s unlikely that we will receive any news about a new Filoni-led project until after the final season of The Clone Wars has aired. But rest assured, we most certainly have not seen the last of Ahsoka Tano or her rebel friends.
