Could Ahsoka Tano Be in the New Cassian Andor Series?

Will the original Fulcrum be making an appearance in Disney's new live-action series?

On November 8, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that Lucasfilm was developing a new live-action series centred around Rogue One’s rebel spy, Cassian Andor.

Diego Luna will be reprising his role as the morally-questionable intelligence officer and the series will be set during the formative years of the Rebellion, serving as a prequel of sorts to the critically-acclaimed 2016 film. Marketed as a spy thriller, the as-yet untitled series will “explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire and, according to Luna himself, “this exciting new format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply”.

Naturally, as soon as fans heard the announcement, they started tweeting out their wish lists and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Ahsoka Tano was among the list of characters they wanted to see in the new series.

For many Clone Wars and Rebels fans, Ahsoka making an appearance in the new series – whether it’s just a small cameo or a recurring role – seems like a no-brainer. Ahsoka was the original Fulcrum agent and aided Bail Organa in setting up an effective spy network for the fledgling Rebellion. For all we know, she could have been responsible for recruiting Cassian to the cause. And viewers who aren’t already familiar with the character wouldn’t even need to be aware of her entire backstory since large portions of it (the fact she was Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice, for instance) would be irrelevant to the task at hand.

So unless the new series takes place during the year or so that she was missing, presumed dead, the tenacious Togruta could very well make her long-awaited live-action debut alongside her fellow Fulcrum.

There are, of course, various arguments against including her in the series, ranging from concerns that they would recast the character for a live-action performance to claims that it would be “unnecessary fan service”. Others are worried that Ahsoka could potentially overshadow Cassian in his own series. An understandable concern, given that Star Wars Rebels fans began to show more interest in Ahsoka’s fate in than in the fates of the various Ghost crew members, but there are ways of bringing her into the series without her stealing Cassian’s thunder: a blurry hologram whose voice would only be recognisable to fans of the animated series, a flashback scene where we see her recruiting a younger Cassian, a short cameo where she debriefs her operative after a successful mission…

And, realistically speaking, this series seems like an ideal opportunity to bring a live-action Ahsoka to our screens and introduce the character to a wider audience, so let’s see if Lucasfilm decides to rise to that particular challenge.

Even if Ahsoka doesn’t make an appearance in the new series, we could see some other fan favourites returning to the small screen in the not-too-distant future, such as K-2SO, Hera Syndulla, Enfys Nest, Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, or perhaps even Maul, whose cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story was an unexpected pleasure for fans of the prequels and animated series. The series could even see the live-action debut of characters that were created for the Star Wars novels and comics, such as Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, Doctor Aphra, or Evaan Verlaine. The possibilities are endless.

The as-yet untitled Cassian Andor series will go into production in 2019 and will premiere on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+.
