Ashley Eckstein and Dave Filoni Pay Tribute to the Late Carrie Fisher

Ashley Eckstein and Dave Filoni pay their respects to the late and great Carrie Fisher

On December 27, 2016, Star Wars fans around the world were shocked to learn that actress Carrie Fisher – best known for her iconic role as Princess (later General) Leia Organa – had passed away only days after suffering a major heart attack during a flight to Los Angeles.

In her post on Instagram, a heart-broken Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano) expressed her deep sorrow over this huge loss and thanked the late Ms Fisher for “teaching us all to be self-rescuing princesses”.

Ashley also confirmed that Her Universe will indeed be working on a tribute design to honour Carrie Fisher, due out later this year.

Given Ashley’s deep respect for this beloved actress and author, I have no doubt that the design will be a heart-felt and sensitive tribute to the fandom’s favourite princess.

Elsewhere on Twitter, Star Wars Rebels Executive Producer Dave Filoni posted a touching sketch depicting a hologram of Princess Leia, Fisher’s dog Gary, and R2-D2 (a poignant reminder that we also lost Kenny Baker in 2016).

Its caption: “We will always remember you, and the hope you inspired in a generation. Thank you Carrie”.

The defiant, hands-on Leia was revolutionary – one of the first true feminist heroines of cinema – and it almost goes without saying that she paved the way for other inspirational female Star Wars characters, including (but not limited to) Padmé Amidala, Rey, Jyn Erso, and Ahsoka Tano.

Like Leia, Carrie Fisher was renowned (and universally loved) for her wit and no-nonsense attitude and she often used her celebrity status to raise awareness on matters of mental health. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder in her early 20s, the late Ms Fisher often spoke out about her struggles with alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression, thus becoming a much-needed guiding light for fans suffering from mental health problems of their own.

May the Force be with all of us (and your family) in these dark times, Carrie. Your humour and wisdom will be sorely missed.
